In 2013, the Cité Hôtels Group will celebrate its 50th !

The first hotel in the Cité Hôtels Group was the Hotel du Donjon in the heart of the medieval Citadel. It was opened in 1963 by Etienne Jacques Pujol, Christine Pujol’s father-in-law. This charming little 16-room hotel welcomed the first visitors to the Medieval Citadel in the modern era.

At the end of the Seventies, Christine Pujol took over the management of the hotel and converted the space of this former orphanage into modern rooms, increasing its capacity to 36 guest rooms. In the early Eighties, the Hotel du Donjon joined the Best Western chain.

In 1992, Christine Pujol bought the Hotel La Vicomté at the foot of the Medieval Citadel. That same year, she opened the Brasserie le Donjon, located at the corner of the Rue Saint Louis and the Rue de la Porte d’Aude in the Citadel. The Hotel La Vicomté took on the colours of the Mercure Hotel brand in 1993 and changed its name to Hotel Mercure Porte de La Cité. In just over 15 years, the hotel’s room capacity increased from 24 to 80 guest rooms by spring 2009.
At the end of the Nineties, Christine Pujol purchased the Hotel des Remparts situated at the Place du Grand Puit in the Medieval Citadel. This hotel became of the three buildings making up the Hotel du Donjon.

In 2003, the Hotel du Donjon made extensions and opened 5 family rooms looking out onto the shady courtyard of the hotel’s gardens. Le Comte Roger, a building with 5 rooms, was joined to the Hotel du Donjon in 2006. Its ground floor was converted to house the Comptoir des Vins et Terroir, a vinotheque promoting the best wines of the Languedoc Roussillon region.

In 2007, the Cité Hôtels Group took over the Formule 1 hotel in Carcassonne. It was entirely renovated in the winter of 2009-2010 to fly the colours of the hotelF1 chain, a French chain of low-cost hotels.

Last but not least, in August 2011, the Cité Hotels Group acquired Hôtel de la Cité - prized jewel among Carcassonne’s hotels – from its previous owners Orient Express Hotels. Hôtel de la Cité joined the MGallery Collection of Memorable Hotels in December 2011
